Indian Origin Teen Tells US How To Save $400 million

An boy of Indian-origin from the US has put forward a practical answer to how to save millions of dollars? Suvir Mirchandani has innovated an idea that can save US government approximately $400 million per year. The idea is as simple as it can get, just change the alphabet font used in all official documents!

According to a CNN report, Mirchandani said that the thought hit him while he was indulged in determining ways to reduce wastage and save money, which was part of his school's science fair project. Fourteen-year-old Mirchandani is a student at a Pittsburgh middle school in US.

According to an NDTV report, he says if the federal government applied the “Garamond” font for all the paperwork and prints, it can save up to $136 million per year. The amount is almost 30 per cent less than $467 million US spends on ink, annually.

Furthermore, $234 million more savings can be done if all the state governments also took to the change.

As per his findings, the Garamond font has thinner strokes and with this feature the area of paper covered by each alphabet is less. Since the ink spread is less, the cost of ink can be reduced by a good margin. His first judgement was made on his school district's ink consumption, which could be reduced by 24 per cent, and save $21,000 annually.

Suvir Mirchandani's findings have been published in the Journal for Emerging Investigators.
